Pune, 19 August 2025: Continuous rainfall since early Monday threw traffic across Pune into chaos, leaving thousands of commuters stranded in long jams and struggling through waterlogged roads.

Major stretches including Ganeshkhind Road, Sinhagad Road, Dhayari, Yerawada, Ahmednagar Road, Karve Road, Deccan Gymkhana, and Katraj Chowk bore the brunt of the downpour, with traffic crawling for hours. Morning and evening rush-hour congestion worsened as several intersections turned into bottlenecks due to heavy waterlogging.

Traffic officials said that low visibility, flooded streets, and higher-than-usual vehicular movement compounded the situation. Nearly 1,100 traffic personnel were stationed at sensitive junctions to manage the flow, but gridlock persisted throughout the day.

For many commuters, routine journeys stretched to more than double the usual travel time. The lack of alternative routes and submerged road sections added to the city’s woes, sparking frustration among motorists.

Meanwhile, Pune Police Commissioner appealed to citizens, saying, “Your safety remains our utmost priority as the city continues to witness heavy rainfall, resulting in waterlogging across several locations. We urge you to refrain from venturing outdoors unless it is absolutely unavoidable. Our officials and staff are ready to assist. In the event of any emergency, please reach out immediately to the helpline number 112.”

Authorities have urged residents to allow for additional travel time, stay updated on weather alerts, and strictly follow traffic rules to minimize disruptions. With forecasts predicting more rain in the coming days, traffic police are on high alert and prepared for quick interventions at vulnerable points to prevent further escalation.
