Autorickshaw Driver Assaults Central Govt Official in Aundh with a Brick during Road Rage
A 44-year-old joint director suffered head injuries and a fractured wrist after being attacked by an autorickshaw driver during a road rage incident in Pune’s Aundh area.
In a shocking case of road rage, a 44-year-old joint director with a central government research and development organisation was assaulted by an autorickshaw driver in Aundh on August 17. The altercation left the officer with a head injury and a fractured wrist, prompting police to register a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Incident Details
According to police, the incident occurred around 9.30 pm at Bhale Chowk when the officer was driving home. Despite the traffic signal turning green, the autorickshaw ahead of him did not move. After he honked, the driver allegedly blocked his path.
“When the victim honked again, the autorickshaw driver stepped out, hurled abuses, and picked up a cement brick. He struck the officer on the head, and while attempting another blow, injured his wrist when the officer raised his hand to shield himself,” said a Chatushrungi police officer.
Injuries and Medical Aid
Passersby intervened and restrained the driver while alerting the police. The injured officer was taken to Sassoon General Hospital before being shifted to a private hospital for further treatment. Doctors confirmed a head injury and a fracture in the right wrist.
Complaint and Police Action
On Thursday, after being discharged, the senior officer filed a formal complaint at Sinhagad Road police station. The accused, identified as a 21-year-old resident of Kothrud, has been booked under sections of the BNS including:
- Wrongful restraint
- Voluntarily causing grievous hurt
- Criminal intimidation
“We have served a notice to the autorickshaw driver to cooperate with the investigation,” said a police official.
Police confirmed that while the victim is recovering, further investigation is underway. Authorities have also urged citizens to remain calm during traffic disputes to prevent such violent altercations.
