Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is preparing for a major revamp, with Terminal 1 set for demolition. However, the process won’t begin immediately and will be aligned with the expansion of the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA).

Terminal 1, which currently serves over 10 million domestic passengers annually, will continue partial operations until the second terminal at NMIA becomes functional. Authorities say shutting it down now would create severe congestion at CSMIA.

Adani Airport Holdings Ltd. has already scaled down certain sections of Terminal 1 due to structural and safety concerns. “The complete demolition will only begin once Navi Mumbai’s Terminal 2 is operational,” said Arun Bansal, CEO of the company.

NMIA is being built in phases—its first phase will handle 20 million passengers per year, while the second phase will expand capacity to 50 million. Only after this second phase is ready will Terminal 1 be permanently closed and redeveloped.

The redevelopment plan for CSMIA includes rebuilding Terminal 1 on the same site, but officials warn that construction, regulatory clearances, and system installations could take several years once demolition starts.
