For most Indians, a government job is the ultimate dream—steady income, lifelong security, and social prestige. But for 29-year-old Vani, a former probationary officer at Punjab National Bank (PNB), the reality of the job proved overwhelming. After two years of service, she resigned, prioritizing her mental health over financial stability.

Vani had cleared the competitive IBPS exam in 2022 and was posted as a Scale-I officer in Meerut, where she handled loan operations. At first, it felt like a milestone—financial independence, respect, and a comfortable lifestyle. But soon, the relentless workload and constant pressure began to take a toll. She described feeling drained, frustrated, and like a different person altogether.

Eventually, she chose to step away. Announcing her decision on Instagram, Vani shared a video with the caption: “Not all heroes wear capes… some just quit jobs. So I closed the chapter that was no longer serving me.”

The post resonated widely, sparking conversations online about the mental strain of high-pressure jobs. While many praised her courage, some related personal experiences. One user wrote that their sister, also a banker, had long wanted to resign but never found the strength to do so. Others admitted feeling stuck in similar jobs without a clear alternative.

Vani was transparent about how she managed to quit without a backup plan. She lived on minimal expenses—under ₹5,000 a month—had consistently saved, and avoided debt. That financial discipline, along with her family’s emotional support, gave her the confidence to walk away.

She also clarified that her decision was personal and not meant to discourage others from government jobs. For her, the role simply did not align with her well-being anymore. “Peace of mind is worth more than a paycheck,” she said.

Her story inspired others to share their own. A former SBI employee revealed how quitting after 12 years led them to start a boutique business, which turned out to be liberating.

Now, Vani co-manages the Instagram page Pestollicious with her partner Saavi, where they share food, travel, and lifestyle content with more than 80,000 followers. Looking back, she says she has no regrets. Instead, she hopes her journey encourages people to reflect on what truly makes them happy—even if it means taking tough decisions.

For some, security lies in a steady government job. For others, like Vani, it lies in choosing mental peace and the freedom to live life on their own terms.
