Nitin Gadkari Pushes for Wider Subways and Approves Bhugaon Bypass to Ease Pune Traffic
Union Minister directs NHAI and PMRDA to expedite congestion relief measures on Pune–Satara and Pune–Kolad highways
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has directed officials to widen subways on the Pune–Satara highway to address rising traffic congestion caused by the rapid increase in vehicles. Reviewing ongoing infrastructure projects in Pune on Sunday, Gadkari emphasized that immediate measures are required to resolve frequent traffic bottlenecks.
Highlighting the severe congestion between Hinjewadi and Pune, the minister also called for the construction of a new underpass and instructed officials to conduct inspections at critical points. He stressed that the long-delayed Bhugaon bypass must be completed without further delay, urging the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) to expedite land acquisition.
Bhugaon Bypass Project Details
- Length: 860 metres
- Width: 18 metres, 4-lane structure
- Project Cost: ₹15.3 crore
- Completion Timeline: 9 months
- Land Acquisition: 95% completed, with FSI and TDR compensation mechanisms
The bypass, once completed, is expected to significantly decongest the Chandni Chowk–Bhugaon stretch and form a crucial link with Pune’s proposed Ring Road. It will also improve connectivity for commuters traveling from Chandni Chowk towards Mulshi, benefiting localities such as Bhugaon, Bhukum, and Pirangut, while easing traffic on the Pune–Kolad National Highway.
Local MLA Mahesh Landge confirmed Gadkari’s directives in a tweet, stating that the project would bring long-awaited relief to daily commuters.
