From September 22, Will LPG Cylinders Cost Less? Here’s How GST Reduction Could Affect You
Pune, September 19, 2025: Starting September 22, several essential and luxury products will become cheaper as the government’s major GST restructuring comes into effect. The GST Council, in its meeting held on September 3, announced the removal of 12% and 28% tax slabs, streamlining them into just two categories — 5% and 18%.
This move directly impacts a wide range of items, including food products, clothing, electronics, vehicles, air conditioners, and televisions. Consumers can expect lower prices across these categories, making it one of the biggest tax reforms since the implementation of GST in 2017.
However, when it comes to LPG cylinders, the relief many households hoped for is not on the cards. Currently, the government levies 5% GST on domestic LPG cylinders and 18% on commercial cylinders used by hotels, restaurants, and sweet shops. The GST Council has not made any changes to these rates, meaning LPG prices will remain unchanged after September 22.
While households will continue paying the same tax for their kitchen gas, consumers will still benefit from reduced prices on FMCG products, health-related items, educational supplies, agricultural equipment, insurance, and automobiles. At the same time, GST on sin products such as tobacco has been increased to 40%, with cold drinks and super luxury cars also brought under the higher tax bracket.
In summary, the new GST reform is expected to bring significant relief to consumers on daily essentials and big-ticket purchases, but LPG cylinders will not see any reduction in tax burden.
