Pilot project aims to protect street cleaners from harsh sun and rain while ensuring comfort and mobility.

In a bid to improve working conditions for conservancy staff, the Coimbatore Corporation has rolled out a pilot initiative to test wearable umbrella gear for street-cleaning workers. The gear, designed like a backpack with an overhead umbrella and a transparent front panel, allows workers to keep their hands free while performing cleaning duties.

According to Corporation officials, the new setup is expected to provide greater comfort and mobility, particularly during extreme weather conditions. The trial began on Monday with 20 conservancy workers receiving the gear, each costing around ₹2,000 and sourced from local MSMEs.

A senior health official said the trial will run for about a week to 10 days, under the direction of the Corporation Commissioner. “We will gather feedback from workers and assess the gear’s performance during this period,” the official explained.

Depending on the trial outcome, the Corporation may expand the initiative to cover a larger section of conservancy staff across the city, offering enhanced protection from both sun and rain.
