Pune Set For Major Policing Boost As 135 New Police Chowky Planned Across City

Pune, June 26, 2026: In a major development aimed at strengthening law enforcement and improving public safety, Pune Police are planning to establish at least 135 new police outposts (chowky) across the city. The proposal, driven by rapid urban expansion, population growth, and evolving crime patterns, is in its final stages and will soon be submitted to the state Home Department for approval.

The initiative seeks to ensure that every police station jurisdiction has a minimum of three police outposts, enabling faster response times and improved policing at the local level.

According to Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, the department has already decided to reopen all police outposts that had previously been shut down. This move has made police services more accessible to citizens, and the focus is now shifting toward establishing additional outposts to meet the city’s growing needs.

Existing Infrastructure Under Pressure

Last year, the state government approved five new police stations in:

  • Manjari
  • Laxminagar
  • Narhe
  • Lohegaon
  • Yeolewadi

All five police stations are now operational, providing additional manpower to the police force. Some of these stations are currently functioning from police outpost premises until permanent infrastructure is developed.

At present, Pune has 45 police stations, including the Cyber Police Station, and 110 police outposts. However, police officials believe this number is inadequate considering the city’s rapid expansion.

Benefits for Citizens

The proposed expansion is expected to bring several benefits:

  • Faster police response during emergencies
  • Easier access to police services and complaint registration
  • Increased local patrolling and surveillance
  • Better monitoring of crime-prone areas
  • Stronger law and order management across the city

Commissioner Amitesh Kumar stated that several police station jurisdictions have become too large to manage effectively without additional outposts.

“Some police station limits in the city are extensive, making it essential to have at least three police outposts under each station. A proposal for new outposts will soon be sent to the Home Department, and we are confident it will receive approval,” he said.

Once approved, the new police outposts are expected to significantly enhance policing capabilities and help curb crime more effectively across Pune.
