Pune-based scientist Dr. Himanshu Kulkarni has scripted history by becoming the first person from India to receive the prestigious International Water Prize, instituted in 2009 by the WaTER Center at the University of Oklahoma, USA. The biennial award honors outstanding contributions to water supply and sanitation, especially in regions grappling with critical water challenges.

Although announced as the awardee in 2024, Dr. Kulkarni was formally presented with the prize on September 15, 2025. The honor includes a trophy and a cash award of USD 25,000.

A Driving Force in India’s Water Policy

Over the years, Dr. Kulkarni has played a pivotal role in shaping India’s water governance. He co-chaired a Working Group for Niti Aayog’s 12th Plan, contributed to the National Aquifer Mapping Program, and has been a strong advocate of aquifer-based groundwater management.

He is the Founder Trustee and Secretary of ACWADAM (Advanced Center for Water Resources Development and Management), Pune, which has pioneered community-led approaches to groundwater sustainability. Alongside, he serves as Professor of Practice in Rural Management at Shiv Nadar Institute of Eminence, and as Visiting Professor at IIT Bombay and Tata Institute of Social Sciences.

Reacting to the honor, Dr. Kulkarni said, “This award reflects the collaborative efforts and partnerships that ACWADAM has nurtured in advancing aquifer-based groundwater management with community involvement. Viewing groundwater as a shared resource is essential for tackling India’s growing water challenges.”

The OU International Water Prize recognizes individuals worldwide for their impact through research, teaching, or service in water supply and sanitation. By focusing on solutions for underprivileged communities in developing nations, the award underscores the importance of equitable and sustainable water management.
