Assamese community in Pune mourns cultural legend with music and heartfelt tributes
Nearly 500 members of the Assamese community in Pune gathered at Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Garden to pay homage to the late cultural icon Zubeen Garg. The evening was filled with his songs, heartfelt memories, and tributes to the artist who left an indelible mark on Indian music and Assamese identity.
For Assam, Zubeen Garg was more than just a singer — he was a lifeline whose voice carried their joys, struggles, and stories for over three decades. His influence extended far beyond his home state, touching lives across India and abroad. The gathering in Pune reflected the deep sense of loss felt even outside Assam, with attendees describing him as a “God-like figure” whose passing has left a void that cannot be filled.
Zubeen Garg tragically passed away on September 19, 2025, at the age of 52 while in Singapore for the North East Festival. Reports indicate that he suffered breathing difficulties while swimming during a sea outing. Despite immediate CPR and medical attention at Singapore General Hospital, he could not be revived and later passed away in the ICU.

Born in 1972 in Tura, Meghalaya, and raised in Assam, Garg’s career took off in the early 1990s with his debut album Anamika. Over the years, he built a rich legacy with hits in Assamese, Hindi, Bengali, and other languages. His Bollywood breakthrough came in 2005 with Ya Ali from the film Gangster, but for his community, he was far more — a composer, actor, humanitarian, and cultural torchbearer.
