Engineering Student in Pune Suffers Eye Burns in Firecracker Accident During Diwali Celebrations
Bright lights and festive cheer turned into a moment of distress for a 20-year-old engineering student in Pune after a firecracker exploded unexpectedly near her face during Diwali celebrations. The incident took place on Monday evening near Sinhagad Road, where the third-year student of a reputed engineering college was celebrating the festival with her friends.
Originally hailing from Nepal, the young woman had just lit the firecracker when it burst prematurely, sending flames directly toward her face. The blast left her with serious injuries to both eyes, including corneal burns. She was quickly rushed to a private eye hospital in the Manik Baug area, where doctors began immediate treatment.
Dr. Anil Dudhbhate, the ophthalmologist handling her case, confirmed that the injuries had affected both the internal and external parts of her eyes. “There are burns on the corneal surface. Though surgery isn’t necessary right now, her vision has been compromised,” he explained. She has been prescribed medication and will require consistent follow-up care for several weeks to monitor her healing process and prevent further damage.
The incident has sparked concern among local authorities. Pune police have issued an advisory urging the public to follow strict safety protocols when using firecrackers. They emphasized the need for heightened caution, especially during festivals, to avoid preventable accidents. Recounting the traumatic moment, the student shared that the cracker exploded suddenly just as she lit it, giving her no time to react.
