Butter Garlic Naan Crowned World’s Best Bread, India Dominates Global Rankings
Celebrated for its irresistible flavor and soft, pillowy texture, Butter Garlic Naan has emerged as the world’s top bread, according to TasteAtlas’ recently released “50 Best Breads” list. The north Indian favorite narrowly outshone its close cousin, the Amritsari Kulcha, which claimed the second spot in the global ranking unveiled on Thursday, October 16.
India’s rich culinary heritage continues to shine, with multiple bread varieties making a strong showing. The flaky Parotta and classic Naan secured positions five and seven, respectively, while the beloved Paratha appeared at number 16.
Adding to the country’s impressive representation, the Aloo Naan also earned a spot at number 26. In total, six Indian breads were recognized among the top 50 worldwide.
It was a surprise to see some global favorites rank lower than expected. Italy’s focaccia, known for its aromatic olive oil base, only reached number 15, while the traditional Middle Eastern lavash landed at number 26.
The Philippines’ pandesal completed the prestigious list, marking its presence among the world’s most loved breads.
Notably absent from the ranking was Mumbai’s iconic pav. A staple across various parts of India and particularly famous in Maharashtra’s Maximum City as well as Goa, pav is a versatile bread often paired with regional delicacies, making its omission rather unexpected.
Many of these celebrated breads trace their origins beyond Indian soil. The Butter Garlic Naan itself evolved from Persian flatbreads, brought to India by the Mughals, who also introduced the kulcha. Over time, the Amritsari version gained iconic status.
Meanwhile, other regional breads highlight India’s culinary diversity: Kerala’s Parotta, the North Indian Paratha, and the universally loved soft Naan each tell their own story of tradition and flavor.
Earlier this month, TasteAtlas also revealed its “20 Best Wraps” list, where Kolkata’s famous Kathi Roll ranked sixth. The chicken Kathi Roll variety earned a separate position at number 14, further showcasing India’s global culinary footprint. The recognition of multiple Indian breads on these international lists highlights not just the country’s gastronomic richness but also the evolving global appetite for Indian flavors.
