Pune: PMC Tightens Waste Collection Monitoring Across 15 Wards After Rising Complaints
Pune, October 29, 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to strengthen supervision of daily garbage collection and lifting operations across its 15 ward offices after detecting irregularities in waste management and receiving numerous complaints from citizens regarding uncollected waste in both residential and public areas.
During recent inspections conducted by Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, officials found that sweeping activities in public spaces were being neglected and that waste at chronic dumping spots remained unattended. Frequent absenteeism among waste collectors was also disrupting the city’s daily sanitation operations.
In response, the Solid Waste Management Department has instructed ward offices to submit daily attendance reports of sanitation workers and updates on cleaning activities. Ward offices have also been asked to address garbage-related complaints on priority to maintain hygiene standards across the city.
Increased Vigilance and Surprise Inspections
According to Sandip Kadam, Head of PMC’s Solid Waste Management Department, several measures have been implemented to ensure consistent waste collection. “Ward offices will now send daily reports, and agencies responsible for waste management will be monitored closely. Surprise inspections and regular feedback mechanisms have been introduced to maintain accountability,” Kadam said.
He added that absenteeism among waste collectors has been a recurring problem and warned that strict action would be taken against staff or agencies failing to perform their duties.
Waste Surge During Festive Season
PMC officials noted a significant increase in waste generation during the Diwali season. The city, which usually produces around 2,400 metric tonnes of waste daily, recorded a rise to nearly 2,500–3,000 metric tonnes over the past two weeks.
