Pune, November 4, 2025 — Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar inaugurated the “Cervical Cancer-Free Pune” campaign organized by the Pune Zilla Parishad Health Department at Sahyadri State Guest House. The initiative aims to eliminate cervical cancer through vaccination, awareness, and timely screening.

The event was attended by Dr. Rajesh Deshmukh, Secretary to the Deputy CM; Gajanan Patil, Chief Executive Officer of the Pune Zilla Parishad; Dr. Ramchandra Hankare, District Health Officer; Dr. Santosh Bhosale, Joint Secretary to the Deputy CM; and representatives from Serum Institute of IndiaJivika FoundationUnion Bank, and the America-India Foundation.

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women in India. Speaking at the event, Pawar emphasized that the HPV vaccine and timely screening can significantly prevent the disease. He also highlighted the importance of raising awareness among women and increasing vaccination coverage.

As part of the campaign, school-based vaccination drives will be conducted to spread awareness among young girls. Additionally, ASHA workers will visit households to educate women about cervical cancer screening and preventive care.

The campaign represents a collective effort toward making Pune the first district in Maharashtra to eradicate cervical cancer through proactive health interventions and community participation.
