Traffic congestion continues to trouble daily commuters across Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune, with long queues, delayed schedules, and prolonged travel hours becoming part of everyday life. However, the ongoing Pune Metro expansion is set to change that narrative, offering a faster and more dependable public transport alternative.

According to officials from MahaMetro, construction work on the 4.5-kilometer Pimpri–Nigdi stretch—an extension of the Swargate–PCMC Metro line—has reached 35% completion. The project is expected to be fully operational by December 2026, marking a key milestone in Pune’s growing metro network.

Once inaugurated, the new line will seamlessly connect Chinchwad, Akurdi, Nigdi, and Bhakti-Shakti Chowk to central Pune. This corridor is projected to reduce travel time by up to 30%, significantly easing the burden on road commuters.

The ₹910.18-crore elevated route spans 4.51 kilometers, divided into four main sections:

  • PCMC to Chinchwad: 1.463 km
  • Chinchwad to Akurdi: 1.651 km
  • Akurdi to Nigdi: 1.062 km
  • Nigdi to Bhakti-Shakti Chowk: 0.975 km

Being constructed along the median of the old Mumbai–Pune Highway, the elevated design ensures minimal disruption to ongoing road traffic.

Four New Stations to Enhance Connectivity

The extension will feature four new metro stations, each strategically designed to integrate with PMPML bus services, nearby railway stations, and auto stands. This improved interconnectivity will benefit both residential and commercial areas, including the Chinchwad industrial belt and nearby educational institutions.

Key upcoming stations such as Khandoba Mal Chowk (Akurdi), Tilak Chowk (Nigdi), and Bhakti-Shakti Chowk are expected to serve as important transit hubs for suburbs like Dehu, Talegaon, and Chikhali.

Progress Update

A total of 1,337 segments are planned for this project, with 517 already completed by April. Segment erection began in October along the Nigdi–Chinchwad section, while precast production continues at full speed. The first segment launching girder has been successfully installed at Khandoba Mal Chowk, marking visible progress on the viaduct structure.

MahaMetro Managing Director Shravan Hardikar confirmed, “Around 35% of the structural work has been completed, and the remaining tasks are being expedited to meet the project deadline.”
