Chaos and heartbreak unfolded at a Gurugram high-rise on Saturday evening when a five-year-old boy accidentally fell from the 22nd floor of his apartment. Police said the child, who had special needs, became trapped inside his home after returning from the park with his caretaker, setting off a series of events that ended in tragedy.

The incident occurred at Pioneer Presidia between 5:30 pm and 5:50 pm. Investigators said the boy ran ahead from the elevator, rushed inside the flat, and slammed the door behind him. This activated the auto-lock of the digital door, leaving the caretaker outside, unable to enter as only the parents knew the passcode.

Both parents — the father, a builder, and the mother, a doctor — were at work during the incident.

Despite the caretaker calling repeatedly for the child to open the door, he did not respond. She alerted building security and contacted the parents, who were several kilometres away. Police believe the boy, distressed and alone, moved toward the balcony to seek help.

He is thought to have climbed onto a clothes stand on the balcony and leaned over the glass railing, losing his balance. As rephrased from an investigating officer: “He rushed into the home and slammed the door shut. The digital lock could be opened only with the passcode, which only the parents knew.”

Sandeep Turan, public relations officer of Gurugram Police, said the child seemed to be trying to get someone’s attention before the fall. Passersby spotted him on the ground and rushed him to a private hospital on Golf Course Road, where doctors pronounced him dead.

Police said the entire episode unfolded in just 10–15 minutes, leaving no time to force open the main door. Turan also stated that the father has ruled out any foul play, giving a statement at Sector 65 police station confirming the death was accidental. The boy’s body was released to the family after an autopsy on Sunday. Authorities are conducting a formal inquiry under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.
