Kolkata Feels Mild Tremors After 5.7-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Bangladesh
Kolkata, November 21, 2025: Mild tremors were felt across Kolkata and several parts of eastern India on Friday morning after a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the quake occurred at 10:08 am (IST) with its epicentre located 10 km east-southeast of Dhaka.
Residents across Kolkata and nearby districts reported feeling light shaking, with ceiling fans, lights, and wall hangings seen swaying for a few seconds. Many people stepped out of homes, housing complexes, and office buildings as a precaution. Social media was flooded with visuals capturing the moment tremors were felt, including clips of swinging fixtures and crowds gathering outdoors.
Tremors were also experienced in several districts of West Bengal — including Dakshin Dinajpur, Uttar Dinajpur, and Cooch Behar — as well as in parts of Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram. No injuries or structural damage have been reported so far. Authorities are monitoring the situation, and further updates are awaited.
Pakistan Records 3.9-Magnitude Quake
In a separate incident, a 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck Pakistan on Thursday, the NCS confirmed. The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km, making it more susceptible to aftershocks.
Shallow earthquakes tend to cause stronger surface shaking as seismic waves travel a shorter distance to reach the ground, increasing the likelihood of structural damage and casualties.
The region — including Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northern India — falls within one of the world’s most active seismic zones, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates converge. Moderate to strong earthquakes are common and often felt across national borders due to closely located fault lines.
More information is awaited from authorities monitoring both seismic events.
