Miraculous Escape : School Bag Saves 11-Year-Old During Leopard Attack In Palghar
Class 5 student survives forest ambush; villagers demand tighter patrols after alarming wildlife encounter.
An 11-year-old boy from Palghar’s Vikramgad taluka had a miraculous escape after a leopard pounced on him while he was walking home from school. The incident, which took place on the forest route near Utawali Adarsh Vidyalaya, has sparked fear among residents and renewed demands for stronger safety measures.
Mayank Vishnu Kuvara, a Class 5 student, was returning to his home in Mala Padvipada nearly four kilometres from school, when the leopard suddenly leapt from the roadside thicket. The animal’s claws landed directly on Mayank’s school backpack, absorbing the impact and preventing a fatal injury. Despite this, he sustained deep wounds on his hands while trying to defend himself.
Startled but determined, Mayank shouted for help and attempted to fight back. The boy walking with him immediately began throwing stones at the leopard. Their cries alerted nearby villagers, who rushed toward the spot, causing the animal to retreat back into the forest.
Locals say leopard sightings had increased in the area over the past week, with warning videos circulating on social media. The latest attack has intensified concerns, especially as many schoolchildren use the same forest route daily.
Mayank was taken to Vikramgad Rural Hospital, where he received stitches for his injuries. Doctors said he is out of danger and responding well to treatment.
Following the incident, villagers have urged the Forest Department to increase patrolling near schools and along forest paths, deploy response teams during student commute hours, and implement long-term safety measures. Officials have assured that preventive steps are being taken and the area is under close monitoring.
Meanwhile, the bravery of Mayank and his friend, who stood their ground and chased the predator away has been widely praised across the region.
