Video: India’s Vande Bharat Sleeper Hits 180 kmph, Showcases Remarkable Stability
India’s next-generation sleeper train has taken a major step closer to reality after successfully completing a high-speed safety demonstration. The Vande Bharat Sleeper train recently clocked an impressive 180 kmph during a trial run on the Kota–Nagda section, showcasing not just speed but also remarkable stability.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared a video of the trial on social media platform X, offering a glimpse into the train’s performance at near-maximum speed. In the footage, the speed indicator can be seen climbing rapidly from 178 kmph to 180 kmph within moments, highlighting the train’s powerful acceleration.
What caught the most attention, however, was the so-called “Water Test.” During the run, glasses filled with water were stacked inside the coach to demonstrate stability. Even at top speed, the water remained undisturbed, underlining the smoothness and balance of the train at high velocity.
Earlier this year, the Railway Ministry confirmed plans to introduce two Vande Bharat Sleeper trains as part of its push to modernise long-distance rail travel. These trains are designed to offer faster, more comfortable overnight journeys, particularly for AC-class passengers.
As noted in the ministry’s year-end review, the sleeper variant of the Vande Bharat is expected to transform long-haul travel in India. The initial services will focus on high-demand routes, with gradual expansion across the rail network. The goal is to significantly cut travel time while improving passenger comfort.
The train is being manufactured by BEML Limited using technology developed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF). It will feature 16 coaches, including AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier accommodations, with a total capacity of 1,128 passengers. With a top speed of 180 kmph, it stands among the fastest overnight trains ever planned for Indian Railways.
At present, Indian Railways operates semi-high-speed Vande Bharat Express trains that are designed for 180 kmph but are capped at a maximum operational speed of 160 kmph. The sleeper version represents a significant step forward in pushing performance boundaries.
In addition to speed and comfort, operational improvements are also being introduced. In 2023, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw directed a revamp of the onboard cleaning system. Inspired by airline practices, the new system involves staff moving through coaches with garbage bags, allowing passengers to easily dispose of waste and helping maintain cleaner interiors.
