Baramati | Maharashtra: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar died in a tragic plane crash in Baramati on Wednesday morning. Just minutes before the fatal incident, a post was shared from his official X (formerly Twitter) account, paying tribute to freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai on his birth anniversary.

The post, published at 8.57 am, remembered Lala Lajpat Rai as a towering figure in India’s freedom struggle and praised his lifelong dedication to the cause of Swaraj. The message quickly gained attention after news of the crash broke, with many users describing it as Pawar’s final public message.

Ajit Pawar was travelling to Baramati when the chartered aircraft crashed while attempting to land at the local airport. According to officials, the aircraft veered off the runway during landing and subsequently caught fire after impact. The plane involved was identified as a Learjet 45.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said the aircraft was carrying five people, including Ajit Pawar, two accompanying staff members—his personal security officer and an attendant—and two crew members. Initial reports indicate that there were no survivors.

Following confirmation of the tragedy, social media platforms were flooded with condolence messages, with citizens, political leaders and supporters expressing shock over the sudden loss. Many users referred to Pawar’s final post, calling it a reminder of how unpredictable life can be.

Family members and senior leaders rushed to Baramati soon after the incident. Ajit Pawar’s wife Sunetra Pawar and sister Supriya Sule were reported to be on their way to the crash site. His brother Shriniwas Pawar said the family was devastated by the loss and confirmed that the last rites would be performed in Baramati.

A detailed investigation has been initiated by aviation authorities to determine the exact cause of the crash. Further updates are awaited.

Proposal To Increase Lok Sabha Seats Could Boost Maharashtra’s Parliamentary Representation Under New Delimitation Model

Pune Panther Organisation Founder-President Sachin Bhosale has demanded the immediate reopening of the pedestrian subway at Fatima Nagar Chowk, warning of a strong public agitation if the authorities fail to act. The demand comes after several complaints regarding pedestrian safety at the busy junction prompted Bhosale to conduct an on-site inspection.

According to Bhosale, the inspection revealed that pedestrians are being forced to risk their lives while crossing the road due to the closure of the subway. The Fatima Nagar junction on Solapur Road has recently been made signal-free by the Pune Traffic Police to ensure smoother vehicular movement. While the move has eased traffic congestion, residents allege that the safety of pedestrians, including students, senior citizens, women, and daily commuters, has been overlooked.

The junction already has an underground pedestrian subway designed to provide safe passage across the road. However, both entrances to the subway have reportedly been shut with shutters, rendering the facility unusable. The subway is said to be in a neglected condition, filled with garbage, plastic waste, liquor bottles, discarded clothing, sacks, and hotel waste, making it inaccessible to the public.

During his visit, Bhosale observed several pedestrians struggling to cross the busy road amid fast-moving traffic. He noted that elderly citizens and women were particularly vulnerable while attempting to navigate the junction. Residents have raised concerns about who would be held accountable if a serious accident were to occur at the location.

Bhosale has urged the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pune Traffic Police to immediately clean, repair, and reopen the subway for public use. He also called for the installation of proper lighting, CCTV surveillance, and security personnel to ensure the safety of users. Stressing that pedestrian safety is as important as traffic management, he warned that Pune Panther Organisation would launch a major protest movement if the authorities fail to take prompt action....
