Baramati | Maharashtra: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar died in a tragic plane crash in Baramati on Wednesday morning. Just minutes before the fatal incident, a post was shared from his official X (formerly Twitter) account, paying tribute to freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai on his birth anniversary.
The post, published at 8.57 am, remembered Lala Lajpat Rai as a towering figure in India’s freedom struggle and praised his lifelong dedication to the cause of Swaraj. The message quickly gained attention after news of the crash broke, with many users describing it as Pawar’s final public message.
Ajit Pawar was travelling to Baramati when the chartered aircraft crashed while attempting to land at the local airport. According to officials, the aircraft veered off the runway during landing and subsequently caught fire after impact. The plane involved was identified as a Learjet 45.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said the aircraft was carrying five people, including Ajit Pawar, two accompanying staff members—his personal security officer and an attendant—and two crew members. Initial reports indicate that there were no survivors.
Following confirmation of the tragedy, social media platforms were flooded with condolence messages, with citizens, political leaders and supporters expressing shock over the sudden loss. Many users referred to Pawar’s final post, calling it a reminder of how unpredictable life can be.
Family members and senior leaders rushed to Baramati soon after the incident. Ajit Pawar’s wife Sunetra Pawar and sister Supriya Sule were reported to be on their way to the crash site. His brother Shriniwas Pawar said the family was devastated by the loss and confirmed that the last rites would be performed in Baramati.
