Pune | January 29, 2026: Pune came to a standstill on Thursday as the city observed a complete bandh following the demise of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. As a mark of respect, traders’ associations, market committees and various organisations suspended all commercial activities across the city.

From major business hubs to neighbourhood markets, normal life was disrupted after a joint decision by the Pune Merchants’ Federation and Market Yard authorities to keep operations shut for the day.

All markets and shops shut:
As per the federation’s decision, all small and large shops, commercial establishments and private offices across Pune remain closed throughout the day. Following appeals by trader leaders Fattehchand Ranka and Mahendra Pitaliya, shops in central Pune as well as suburban areas have also downed shutters.

Market Yard and sub-markets closed:
The impact of the bandh has extended to the agriculture sector. Pune’s Market Yard is completely shut, including the jaggery and grocery market, fruit, vegetable and flower markets, pan market, banana market, cattle market, weighbridge centres and fuel outlets. Sub-markets at Moshi, Uttamnagar, Manjari and Khadki are also closed.

Government offices and schools:
All government and semi-government offices are shut following an official holiday announcement.

Public events cancelled:
Several public programmes, press conferences and felicitation events have been cancelled. Former Union Minister Prakash Javadekar’s scheduled event on January 30 has also been postponed.

Political offices:
NCP offices of both the Ajit Pawar faction and the Sharad Pawar faction in Shivajinagar remain closed. Heavy police deployment has been made near ‘Jijai’ residence in Bhosalenagar and the ‘Baramati Hostel’ area in Gokhalenagar, where all activities have been halted.

Except for essential services such as hospitals and medical stores, daily life in Pune has come to a complete halt. Traders said the bandh is a tribute to Ajit Pawar’s contributions, particularly his efforts in addressing long-pending issues faced by the business community.
