Rare Indian Rock Python Spotted in Koyna Dam’s Shivsagar Reservoir, Rescued Safely
Bamnoli: In a rare sighting, tourists spotted a massive Indian Rock Python (Python molurus), commonly known as the Indian python, in the Shivsagar Reservoir of the Koyna Dam. Wildlife experts confirmed that this was the first time such a rare species had been seen by tourists in the reservoir.
The python was captured on camera by visitors while they were swimming in the reservoir. According to preliminary assessments, the reptile is believed to have entered the Munavale area while moving from the core zone of the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve towards the Vasota region.
The Munavale area has recently emerged as a major tourist attraction following the state government’s ambitious international-standard water tourism project. The sighting occurred while tourists were enjoying boating activities. However, the presence of the python near Vasota Fort caused panic among visitors.
Snake rescuers promptly informed the Forest Department. With the assistance of forest officials, the python was safely rescued and released back into its natural habitat.
Wildlife experts have expressed surprise over how an Indian Rock Python from the forest reached the reservoir, and further observation is underway to understand its movement pattern.
