Pune | February 11, 2026: In a major step towards modernising power distribution and improving transparency in electricity management, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL – Mahavitaran) has intensified public awareness efforts on the adoption of smart electricity meters, calling them a “technological necessity of the times”.

As part of a statewide awareness campaign from February 9 to February 23, Mahavitaran is educating consumers about the need, benefits, and functionality of smart meters, while addressing misinformation and public concerns surrounding their installation and usage.

Officials said the initiative aims to increase public acceptance by clearly explaining how smart meters improve accuracy, transparency, and service efficiency in power distribution.

From Mechanical to Smart Technology

Drawing a parallel with technological evolution, Mahavitaran officials stated that electricity metering has moved from mechanical disc meters to electronic meters and now to smart digital meters, similar to the evolution from mechanical clocks to smartwatches. This shift, they said, reflects the natural progression of technology and the growing need for digital integration in essential services.

What is a Smart Meter?

A smart meter is not just a metering device but a **two-way communication system**. It automatically records electricity consumption and transmits real-time data directly to Mahavitaran’s central system, eliminating manual meter reading and human intervention. This ensures greater accuracy and transparency in billing.

Myths and Facts

Mahavitaran addressed several common misconceptions:

Myth: Smart meters increase electricity bills

Fact: Smart meters ensure accurate billing. Errors caused by manual readings and estimated billing are eliminated. Consumers are billed only for the exact electricity they use.

Myth: Consumers must pay for meter installation

Fact: Smart meters are installed free of cost for both new connections and replacement of old meters. No installation charges are taken from consumers.

Myth: Smart meters are prepaid meters

Fact: The currently installed Time of Day (ToD) smart meters are postpaid, and consumers continue to receive monthly bills as per the existing billing system.

Key Benefits for Consumers

Mahavitaran highlighted multiple advantages for users:

Accurate and transparent billing: Automatic readings eliminate disputes and billing complaints.

Real-time consumption tracking: Consumers can monitor their electricity usage hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly through mobile applications.

Time of Day (ToD) tariff benefits: Electricity used between 9 am and 5 pm attracts a concession of ₹0.80 to ₹1 per unit, helping reduce bills for responsible users.

Support for solar energy users: Smart meters are highly beneficial for consumers using rooftop solar systems under net metering, as they accurately record both consumption and power exported to the grid.

Faster fault response: System faults are immediately detected, reducing downtime during power outages.

Energy management: Consumers can analyse usage patterns, compare monthly consumption, and identify high-consumption appliances such as ACs and geysers to plan energy savings effectively.

Mahavitaran officials stated that the smart meter initiative has been introduced in the interest of consumers and transparency, and represents a major reform in electricity governance.

Calling upon citizens to reject misinformation, the utility appealed to consumers to adopt smart meters as responsible and aware citizens, stating that the technology is essential for building a modern, efficient, and transparent power distribution system.
