There was a time when highways were ruled by trucks flaunting poetic lines, dramatic declarations of love and the evergreen “Horn OK Please” painted proudly across their backs. Those moving canvases often gave travellers something to smile about during long journeys. Today, that tradition seems to have found a new home. Auto-rickshaws, especially in Pune, are now carrying forward the legacy of punchy one-liners — and sometimes, they go a step further by delivering statements that are impossible to ignore.

Recently, a video captured at a traffic signal began circulating widely online. Shot from inside a car, the clip shows an auto-rickshaw waiting ahead in traffic. Printed boldly across the back was a line that instantly grabbed attention: “No airbags, we die like real men.” The sheer confidence of the message made viewers pause and replay the clip just to make sure they had read it correctly.

Adding to the humour, the person who posted the video overlaid a caption that read, “Pune is not for beginners!” — a line that resonated with countless people familiar with navigating traffic there. Within hours, the comment section turned into a playground of wit, sarcasm and playful exaggeration.

One user jokingly called it the “Maruti Suzuki tagline.” Another added a humorous gender twist, writing, “Women are safe! WE come with our own.. God made us perfect for autorikshwzzz.” The internet, as always, wasn’t short of dark humour either. A commenter remarked, “Bro literally died in Mumbai yesterday.”

Someone else summed up the fearless spirit associated with locals by saying, “Puneites fear nothing..they carry their jaan hatheli pe.” Meanwhile, another user tweaked the original line for comic effect: “Die like primitive cavemen …. There, fixed it.”

The creativity did not stop there. One amused viewer wrote, “Signal pe khade rehna bhi adventure sport hai.” (Even standing at a signal is an adventure sport.) Another chimed in, “Seatbelts are optional, attitude is compulsory.” The mix of regional pride, satire and exaggerated bravado made the post even more shareable.

Interestingly, this is not the first time a Pune auto-rickshaw has grabbed online attention. Last year, another video featuring a uniquely decorated rickshaw went viral for entirely different reasons. Nicknamed by users as “Auto Or Aquarium,” the vehicle redefined the idea of an ordinary ride.

The clip revealed an auto fitted with colourful LED strips and fairy lights illuminating the cabin. Right behind the driver’s seat sat a small aquarium filled with fish, calmly swimming despite the traffic outside. As if that were not eye-catching enough, speakers were mounted above the tank, turning the compact space into a rolling entertainment zone.

Social media users were quick to react. One person commented, “I would pay three times the amount for this ride.” Another enthusiastically declared, “I will never get off this rickshaw.” A third user playfully wrote, “We always keep our customers entertained. That’s what they mean.”

Taken together, these two viral moments highlight how everyday commutes can unexpectedly turn into talking points online. Between bold warnings painted on the back and creatively designed interiors glowing with lights and music, Pune’s auto-rickshaws seem determined to leave a lasting impression.
