Pune, February 23, 2026:
BJP corporator Shrinath Bhimale was elected unopposed as the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Pune Municipal Corporation after the nomination filed by the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) was rejected on procedural grounds.

The development took place during the nomination scrutiny process on Monday, when the candidature of NCP corporator Suhas Tingre was declared invalid due to a delay in submission.

According to civic officials, Tingre’s nomination form was submitted one minute after the official deadline, making it ineligible under election rules. Election Officer and PMC Commissioner Satish Khadke confirmed that the nomination had to be rejected strictly as per procedure.

With the only opposing nomination disqualified, Bhimale was formally declared elected unopposed to the powerful 16-member Standing Committee panel.

BJP’s Numerical Advantage

The Standing Committee currently comprises 12 members from the Bharatiya Janata Party, giving the party a clear majority. Due to this numerical strength, the outcome was widely seen as a foregone conclusion, even before the scrutiny process.

While the BJP officially fielded Shrinath Bhimale, the Nationalist Congress Party nominated Suhas Tingre as a symbolic challenger, despite being in a minority position within the panel.

Procedural Controversy Sparks Debate

Sources said Tingre’s nomination was submitted through corporator Yogita Bhor, but election officials maintained that the submission missed the deadline by a minute, leading to its rejection.

The incident has triggered political reactions within the civic body, with opposition members questioning the rigid application of procedural rules in a key municipal election, while the administration has defended the decision as rule-based and legally sound.

With Bhimale’s unopposed election, the BJP further consolidates its control over one of the most influential committees in the Pune Municipal Corporation, which plays a crucial role in financial decisions, development projects, and policy approvals for the city.
