Pune | March 2, 2026: In a major step to strengthen passenger security and improve fare compliance, Pune Metro has announced a significant upgrade to its Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gate system across all metro stations. Under the new system, metro gates will now remain closed by default and will open only after a valid ticket or card is scanned.

The new system will come into effect from Tuesday, March 3, 2026. Until now, AFC gates used to remain open, with green signals allowing entry after scanning, and the flaps would close only if an invalid or no ticket was detected. With the revised system, the gates will stay shut at all times and open strictly after successful ticket verification.

According to Pune Metro officials, passengers will now be required to scan their QR code tickets, metro smart cards, or WhatsApp-based tickets at the scanner. Only after a successful scan will the AFC gate doors open, allowing entry or exit. Once the passenger passes through, the gates will automatically close again.

The new system ensures that unauthorised entry without a valid ticket will not be possible, as gates will not open without proper scanning. This move is aimed at preventing ticketless travel, improving station discipline, and enhancing overall passenger safety.

Pune Metro authorities stated that the upgraded AFC mechanism will make the metro system more secure, transparent, and commuter-friendly, while also aligning Pune Metro operations with global urban transit standards.
