Integrated Double-Decker Flyover Near Savitribai Phule Pune University Opens, Expected to Ease Traffic Congestion
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis says strong infrastructure is key to Pune’s growth as the new flyover aims to decongest one of the city’s busiest junctions.
Pune, March 8, 2026: A major infrastructure project aimed at reducing traffic congestion in Pune was inaugurated on Sunday as the integrated double-decker flyover in front of Savitribai Phule Pune University was opened for public use. The project was inaugurated virtually by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Speaking at the event, Fadnavis said rapidly developing cities like Pune require robust infrastructure and the government is implementing multi-dimensional planning to address traffic congestion and support long-term urban growth.
The flyover project replaces the old bridge at the busy University Chowk junction, which had long been a major traffic bottleneck. Despite initial challenges, opposition, and criticism during the early stages of the project, the government moved ahead after consulting stakeholders and political leaders, eventually completing the project successfully.
According to Fadnavis, Pune has emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing cities. After witnessing major growth in the IT sector, the city is now becoming a significant hub for Global Capability Centres (GCCs). Over the past year, Pune has seen the highest development of GCC office space in the country, further strengthening its economic and industrial importance.
He emphasized that cities that fail to develop adequate infrastructure often experience slowed growth, which is why the government has prioritised decongesting Pune through projects such as flyovers, grade separators, underpasses, and the expansion of public transport.
The Chief Minister also noted that infrastructure development in Pune is progressing on three levels simultaneously — on the ground through roads, above ground through flyovers and metro lines, and underground through tunnels and underpasses. Major projects such as ring roads and the expansion of the metro network are also underway to improve mobility in the city.
During the event, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar said the opening of the flyover marks an important moment for Pune residents, as the area around the university’s main gate and Ganeshkhind Road had been experiencing severe traffic congestion for many years.
The integrated structure features a two-level design, with the metro corridor running on the upper deck while the lower level functions as a road flyover. The project includes dedicated ramps connecting key areas such as Aundh, Baner, Pashan, and Shivajinagar, along with an underpass and connectivity to Senapati Bapat Road, which is expected to significantly streamline traffic movement in the region.
Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said the project was constructed by Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority at a cost of approximately ₹277 crore. The flyover stretches around 1,763 meters including ramps and is expected to reduce congestion across the Shivajinagar, Aundh, Baner, and Pashan corridors.
State Minister Madhuri Misal highlighted that the state budget has increased infrastructure spending by 21 percent, with significant allocations for projects in Pune. These include metro expansion, the Ramwadi–Wagholi metro corridor, the Yerwada–Katraj underground tunnel, and several road-widening initiatives.
Officials said the flyover also features a 55-metre steel girder to support smooth traffic flow and has been designed as a critical mobility link for western Pune.
