Viral Video Sparks Outrage After Woman Brutally Beats 3-Year-Old Girl, Throws Chilli Powder in Her Eyes in Kalyan
Shocking visuals circulating on social media have brought attention to an alleged case of child abuse in Bapgaon, Bhiwandi, leading to the arrest of a 36-year-old woman accused of violently assaulting her three-year-old adopted daughter. Police said the incident took place in the Bapgaon locality near Kalyan, where the couple had been living with the young girl. The child had reportedly been taken into their care in December last year after her biological mother passed away. According to local sources, a friend of the girl’s father had entrusted the couple with her upbringing.
The accused woman, identified as Reshma Sheikh (name changed to protect identity), allegedly became furious after the toddler addressed a neighbour as “mother”. Investigators said the woman returned home and began beating the child severely. During the assault, her husband reportedly recorded the entire incident on his mobile phone.
Footage that later surfaced online allegedly shows the woman repeatedly hitting the child while warning her not to call the neighbour “mother” again. In one disturbing segment, the woman is seen forcing chilli powder into the child’s mouth and eyes as the girl cries loudly in pain.
Police officials said the husband, who works near the Kalyan Court preparing notary-related documents, was present during the incident. Although he can reportedly be heard trying to verbally stop his wife while filming, authorities said he made no serious attempt to physically intervene or protect the child. Because of this, he has also been named as an accused in the case.
Inspector Jitendra Thakur from Padgha Police Station confirmed that legal action was initiated soon after the video began circulating widely online. Officers registered a case against the couple and took the woman into custody while continuing their investigation.
Residents of Jhankar Mohalla, where the family lived, have alleged that the child had faced repeated violence over minor issues in the past. Witnesses claimed the most recent assault was triggered solely because the girl called a neighbouring woman “mamma,” which reportedly enraged the foster mother.
Following the incident, police rescued the child and shifted her to a child care home where she will receive protection and necessary support. Authorities are also trying to establish contact with the girl’s biological father as the investigation continues.
Officials stated that further legal steps will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing probe, while the safety and well-being of the minor remain the top priority for the authorities handling the case.
