Laser Speed Cameras Installed on Mumbai–Pune Highway; Authorities Target Overspeeding Vehicles
Efforts to strengthen road safety on the Mumbai–Pune National Highway have taken a technological step forward as Pune Rural Police install advanced laser speed cameras along the Vadgaon Maval and Lonavala stretches. The new system is designed to detect vehicles that exceed the permitted speed limits and enable authorities to take strict action against reckless drivers.
The cameras function 24 hours a day, allowing traffic authorities to monitor vehicles during both daytime and nighttime. Officials decided to introduce the system after observing a growing number of accidents on this busy highway corridor.
Pune Rural Superintendent of Police Sandeepsing Gill stated that a large number of highway accidents occur because of overspeeding and mistakes made by drivers. To improve traffic discipline and reduce such incidents, the police have started using laser speed cameras that can accurately track speeding vehicles.
Support for this road-safety initiative has been provided by the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety along with the Global Road Safety Partnership, organisations that work to improve traffic safety standards worldwide.
Authorities have installed these cameras at three separate locations in the Lonavala and Vadgaon Maval areas along the old Mumbai–Pune highway. The devices use advanced technology capable of measuring vehicle speeds with high precision and remain fully operational throughout the day and night. The equipment can record speeds of up to 320 kilometres per hour, enabling police to detect even extremely fast-moving vehicles.
Beyond identifying vehicles that violate speed limits, the cameras can also capture clear photographs and video footage of the vehicles involved. This digital evidence allows traffic authorities to take enforcement action against offenders.
The system is also capable of identifying other traffic violations. Riders travelling without helmets and drivers using mobile phones while operating vehicles can also be detected through the cameras, making it easier for authorities to act against such rule-breaking behaviour.
Pune district has witnessed a considerable number of serious road accidents over the years, with two-wheeler riders and pedestrians accounting for a large share of fatalities. Police officials believe that strict monitoring of speeding cars, trucks and other heavy vehicles through such technology can help bring down accident numbers.
Currently, the laser speed cameras have been installed on a trial basis in the Vadgaon Maval and Lonavala areas. If the system proves effective in controlling overspeeding and improving highway safety, authorities may consider expanding the use of similar technology to other accident-prone roads in the region.
