A social media stunt turned serious after a family allegedly tried to parcel an elderly man in a gunny sack, claiming later it was meant as a statement on rising travel costs.

A bizarre incident from Bengaluru has gone viral after a family attempted to ‘courier’ an elderly man by packing him inside a gunny sack and taking him to a courier office.

The incident took place in the Vyalikaval area, where the family reportedly arrived at a courier centre with a large sack and asked staff to send it to Mangaluru. They did not initially reveal that a person was inside.

Suspicious of the unusual request, the courier staff insisted on checking the package. When the family refused to open it, the staff opened the sack themselves and were shocked to find an elderly man inside.

According to reports, the man appeared distressed and was struggling to breathe. The staff immediately helped him, offering water and ensuring he was safe.

When questioned, the family allegedly continued to insist that the “parcel” be sent, even offering to pay the required charges. As the situation escalated, the courier office contacted the police, but the family reportedly left the spot.

Police later tracked them down and brought them to the station for questioning. During the inquiry, the family claimed the act was part of a social media reel intended to highlight rising bus fares and the difficulty in getting tickets during the festive season.

The woman involved reportedly said she was upset that her father could not travel to Mangaluru due to high fares and lack of availability.

Police counselled the family over the seriousness of the act, after which they issued an apology.

The incident has sparked widespread concern online, raising questions about the lengths people may go to for social media content and the potential risks involved in such stunts.
