Pune, March 24, 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced a comprehensive healthcare push in its 2026–27 budget, focusing on affordable and modern medical services under the “Healthy Pune” initiative.

Presenting the budget, Standing Committee Chairman Shrinath Bhimale outlined plans to strengthen existing healthcare infrastructure while introducing advanced treatment facilities for citizens.

Currently, the civic body operates 53 outpatient departments, 20 maternity homes, a 400-bed general hospital and a dedicated infectious diseases hospital. These facilities collectively serve around 12,000 outpatients and 300 inpatients daily, benefiting nearly 30 lakh citizens annually. Around 8,500 deliveries are conducted each year at municipal hospitals, with most services provided free of cost. A budget allocation of approximately ₹150 crore has been made for medicines and medical assistance schemes for economically weaker sections.

To further enhance healthcare services, PMC has proposed upgrading six maternity homes and five hospitals into multi-speciality facilities equipped with ICUs, NICUs and advanced nursing care. Additionally, a 350-bed multi-speciality hospital is under development in Warje.

A major highlight is the plan to establish the city’s first civic-run cancer hospital in Baner under a public-private partnership model. The facility will offer treatments such as radiotherapy using advanced equipment at government-approved rates. Diagnostic services will also be strengthened with a new MRI and CT scan centre planned in the Gangadham area to make expensive tests more affordable.

In a significant move, IVF (in-vitro fertilisation) services will be introduced at municipal maternity hospitals, providing accessible fertility treatment options for families.

The budget also increases financial assistance for cancer and dialysis treatments up to ₹3 lakh. Additionally, the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay accident insurance scheme will be revamped for better implementation.

On the academic front, the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College is set to graduate its first batch of MBBS students this year. Plans are underway to expand postgraduate education, establish a geriatric care centre, introduce IVF facilities and set up specialised care units for children with disabilities. A 14-storey hostel and staff accommodation building is also proposed at the Naidu Hospital campus.

Officials said these initiatives aim to provide high-quality, affordable healthcare within the city, reducing dependence on private hospitals and improving overall public health outcomes.
