Pune, April 13, 2026: In a shocking incident in Pune, 13 Bangladeshi girls fled a women’s shelter facility in the Hadapsar area after allegedly attacking staff members, raising serious concerns about safety and supervision at such institutions.
The incident occurred at the Rescue Foundation located on Hadapsar–Mohammadwadi Road. The escape comes shortly after authorities in the city detained several Bangladeshi women for allegedly using forged Aadhaar cards, intensifying scrutiny on monitoring systems.
According to officials, the escape was not spontaneous but carefully orchestrated. One of the girls reportedly approached a caretaker, Laxmi Kamble, requesting access to a room on the pretext of needing medication. When the door was opened, a group of girls allegedly overpowered her and confined her inside a medical room, enabling the rest to proceed with their plan.
The situation escalated due to a security lapse, as the main gate was reportedly left open during routine cleaning. Taking advantage of this, all 13 girls rushed out of the premises. During their escape, they allegedly assaulted a security guard by pulling and biting him.
Authorities were alerted immediately, prompting a search operation in nearby areas including Syed Nagar and Hadapsar. Police have so far located two of the girls, while efforts continue to trace the remaining 11.
In a development that has drawn attention, no formal FIR has been registered yet, with police limiting action to a general diary entry.
The Rescue Foundation, which rehabilitates women rescued from human trafficking, stated that police protection at the facility had been withdrawn in March 2024 despite repeated requests for reinstatement. Officials also highlighted overcrowding at the shelter, noting that many residents are foreign nationals awaiting deportation—a process that can take up to two years and often leads to psychological distress.
Police, including teams from Kalepadal station, are currently reviewing CCTV footage and continuing search operations to locate the missing girls.
