Pune: Doctor Arrested For Alleged Illegal Abortions In Uruli Kanchan; Sent To Police Custody Till June 21
Pune, June 19, 2026: Uruli Kanchan Police have arrested a doctor on charges of allegedly conducting illegal abortions and violating mandatory medical procedures. A local court has remanded him to police custody until June 21 for further investigation.
The accused has been identified as Dr. Tukaram Mote (52). Police have also registered a case against his wife in connection with the matter.
According to the complaint filed by the Medical Superintendent of a Rural Hospital, the alleged offences took place between January 9, 2025, and April 14, 2026, at Maher Hospital in Uruli Kanchan.
During an investigation into an illegal abortion case at Lavangare Hospital in Kedgaon, a special team examined hospital records and contacted a woman patient whose details appeared in the register. The inquiry reportedly revealed that she had previously been admitted to Dr. Mote’s hospital.
The complaint alleges that several abortions were carried out without obtaining proper consent from patients and without adhering to mandatory government regulations and documentation requirements.
Investigators suspect that patient records and case papers were incomplete, with crucial personal details either omitted or inadequately documented. Authorities are now probing whether additional individuals were involved in the alleged activities and whether a larger illegal abortion network may have been operating.
During the court proceedings, Assistant Public Prosecutor Bhagyashree Sancheti-Dagale argued that custodial interrogation was necessary to conduct a detailed investigation, verify patient records, identify affected patients, trace possible accomplices, and determine whether additional registers or documents exist beyond those already seized.
Accepting the prosecution’s arguments, the court granted police custody of the accused until June 21.
Further investigation is underway.
