Centre says gas supply remains stable despite global tensions; new booking system and small cylinders introduced for convenience

Amid concerns over global tensions and supply disruptions, the central government has issued a fresh update on LPG and natural gas availability in the country, assuring that there is no shortage of gas cylinders.

Officials said that supply chains remain stable, with tankers continuing to arrive via key international routes, ensuring uninterrupted availability of LPG across India.

The government has clarified that domestic LPG supply is normal, with nearly 99% of cylinder bookings being fulfilled without delays. Authorities said no agency has reported any shortage so far.

Even as geopolitical tensions impacted global supply earlier, the situation has now improved with regular arrivals of gas shipments.

New OTP System For Cylinder Booking

To make the booking process more secure, an OTP-based system has been introduced. Consumers will now receive a one-time password on their registered mobile number, which must be shared at the time of delivery.

Without OTP verification, the cylinder will not be handed over. This step is aimed at preventing fraud and ensuring that cylinders reach the correct users.

Mini 5 Kg Cylinders Introduced

In a move to support single users and small households, the government has introduced 5-kg mini cylinders. These can be purchased easily by showing a valid ID proof, without the need for address verification.

Officials said that thousands of such cylinders have already been sold, indicating growing demand for smaller, more flexible options.

Commercial And Industrial Supply Status

The government stated that around 70% of commercial cylinder demand is currently being met, with additional supplies being sent to states as required.

At the same time, priority sectors such as schools, hospitals, cold storage units, food processing and pharmaceutical industries are receiving 100% gas supply to ensure essential services are not affected.

Boost In Gas Supply For Fertilizer Sector

In a significant move ahead of the monsoon season, natural gas supply to urea plants has been increased to around 90% of their average consumption, up from 70–75% earlier.

Officials said this decision was taken based on improved availability of LNG imports and existing inventory levels. Around 95% of the country’s fertilizer demand has already been met, ensuring smooth preparation for upcoming crop sowing.

Push For PNG Connections

The government is also encouraging households to switch to piped natural gas (PNG) connections for cooking. Consumers opting for PNG may be asked to surrender their LPG connections as part of long-term policy planning.

What It Means For Consumers

With stable supply, added security measures, and new flexible options like mini cylinders, the government aims to make LPG access more reliable and efficient. Authorities have urged consumers not to panic, assuring that systems are in place to maintain uninterrupted supply across the country.
