Lightweight email app will stop functioning after deadline; users advised to move to Outlook Mobile for continued access

Microsoft has announced that it will discontinue its Outlook Lite app for Android users, with the app set to stop functioning after May 25, 2026. The move is expected to impact users who rely on the lightweight version for email access, especially on devices with limited storage or slower internet connections.

Outlook Lite, launched in 2022, was designed as a simplified email solution for users in emerging markets and those using entry-level smartphones. However, the company is now shifting focus to its full-featured Outlook Mobile app.

What Will Change After May 25?

After the deadline, the app may still open on devices, but key features will stop working. Users will no longer be able to access their mailboxes, and functions such as navigation and email operations are expected to become unusable.

This effectively means the app will no longer serve its primary purpose, making it necessary for users to switch to an alternative.

Why Microsoft Is Discontinuing Outlook Lite

The decision is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to streamline its mobile services. The company had already stopped allowing downloads of Outlook Lite from the Google Play Store in 2025.

Microsoft now aims to consolidate its user base under the main Outlook Mobile app, which offers enhanced features, improved security, broader mailbox support and better integration with Microsoft 365 services.

Will Your Data Be Lost?

Microsoft has assured users that their data will remain safe. Emails, calendar entries and attachments will not be deleted during the transition.

Users can recover all their data by simply logging into the Outlook Mobile app using the same account credentials.

How To Switch To The New App

Users can upgrade directly through the Outlook Lite app using the in-app upgrade option, which redirects them to the Play Store. Alternatively, they can manually download the Outlook Mobile app and sign in.

Once logged in, all existing emails and data will sync automatically, allowing a seamless transition.

What It Means For Users

While the shutdown may inconvenience users who preferred a lighter app, the transition is expected to offer a more robust and feature-rich email experience. Microsoft has also indicated that IT administrators do not need to take special action, but organisations should guide employees to switch in time to avoid disruptions.

The move marks a shift towards unified app ecosystems, where companies focus on fewer but more powerful platforms for better performance and support.
