Pune Law College Ragging Case: Five Students Booked After Complaint of Harassment
Serious allegations of ragging have surfaced from a prominent law college in Pune, leading to police action against five students. The case came to light after a second-year student accused a group of targeting him over several months, reportedly as retaliation for reporting misconduct within the hostel.
The complainant, a 35-year-old student who was in his first year of the LL.B program during the time of the incidents, stated that the harassment began after he informed college authorities about certain students consuming alcohol on campus on October 6, 2024. According to him, this triggered a pattern of abuse that continued until December 25, 2025.
Based on his complaint, Deccan Gymkhana Police registered an FIR on Saturday under provisions of the Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1999. The accused students, all reportedly in their early 20s, have been booked, and an investigation is now underway.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1), Krushikesh Rawale, confirmed that authorities are examining the timeline and details of the allegations. He added that the FIR was filed only after a preliminary inquiry into the student’s claims.
The FIR outlines multiple forms of alleged harassment. The complainant claimed that he was verbally abused, subjected to cigarette smoke blown in his face, and faced repeated acts of intimidation. He further alleged that the accused broke the glass panel of his hostel room door, threw eggs at it, and spat on it after consuming gutkha.
Despite reportedly informing college authorities about the situation, the student claimed that no effective action was taken. Feeling unheard, he escalated the matter to the University Grants Commission’s anti-ragging helpline. This led to the formation of an internal inquiry committee by the institution.
While the committee completed its investigation and submitted a report to the UGC, the complainant expressed dissatisfaction with its findings. He stated in the FIR that he found the report flawed and unacceptable, which ultimately prompted him to approach the police.
Attempts to seek a response from the college administration, including Principal Deepa Paturkar, were unsuccessful as calls went unanswered.
