Pune: Road Excavation On Koregaon Park Main Road Raises Safety And Accountability Concerns
Pune, April 27, 2026: Serious concerns have been raised over public safety and civic accountability after an unmarked road excavation was reported on Koregaon Park Main Road, one of the city’s busiest stretches.
Residents and commuters have flagged the ongoing work as hazardous, citing the absence of basic safety measures such as barricades, warning signs, or reflective markers. The site reportedly features deep trenches, exposed pipelines, and construction debris scattered across the carriageway, posing risks especially to two-wheeler riders and pedestrians.
As per guidelines laid down by the Pune Municipal Corporation, all excavation work within city limits must display essential information including the contractor’s name, authorisation details, nature of work, project timeline, and contact information of responsible officials. However, none of these details were visible at the site, raising questions about the legitimacy and supervision of the project.
Local residents have reported multiple near-miss incidents, particularly during evening hours when visibility is low. Senior citizens and schoolchildren using the route daily are among the most vulnerable.
Key concerns highlighted by citizens include uneven road surfaces without markings, lack of reflectors or cones at night, uncoordinated traffic diversions, and unattended machinery and construction material left on the road.
Civic activist Sachin Bhosale criticised the situation, stating that such unregulated work compromises both public safety and transparency. “When there is no clarity on who is responsible for the work, accountability is completely undermined. Citizens have the right to know who is in charge,” he said.
Bhosale also alleged that similar lapses are being observed at multiple locations across Pune, pointing to a broader issue of inadequate monitoring and enforcement.
He has urged the civic body to take immediate corrective action, including installation of information boards at all work sites, mandatory safety barricading, regular inspections, and stricter action against non-compliant contractors.
The incident highlights ongoing challenges in urban infrastructure management, where rapid development is often not matched by adherence to safety norms. Residents have called for stricter enforcement to prevent accidents and ensure transparency in public works.
