Former Cricketer Salil Ankola Undergoing Depression Treatment In Pune, Wife Says ‘He Will Return To Cricket Soon’
Former India fast bowler and ex-national selector Salil Ankola is recovering at a mental health treatment centre near Pune after battling severe depression following his mother’s death
Former Indian cricketer and ex-national selector Salil Ankola is currently undergoing treatment for depression at a mental health and rehabilitation centre near Pune. His wife Riya Ankola shared that the former fast bowler had been struggling emotionally after the death of his mother in October 2024.

According to family members, Salil’s mental health gradually deteriorated over the past several months as he found it difficult to cope with the loss. He reportedly began falling ill frequently before deciding to seek professional treatment in a peaceful environment.
Riya Ankola said Salil admitted himself to the centre a few weeks ago after realising that his condition needed proper medical attention. She added that the family fully supported his decision to take time away from work and focus on recovery.
“He is recovering well, exercising regularly and trying to come out of this difficult phase. Cricket is, was and will always remain his first love. We are confident he will return to it soon,” she said.
Riya also described Salil as a fighter who has repeatedly overcome difficult situations in life. She said family members and close friends continue to stand firmly beside him during this period.
This is not the first major personal struggle faced by the former cricketer. Nearly two decades ago, Salil Ankola had reportedly undergone rehabilitation treatment related to alcohol addiction. However, he had quit alcohol long ago and is now battling depression, according to reports.
Salil Ankola represented India in one Test match and 20 One Day Internationals. He made his Test debut against Pakistan in Karachi in 1989, the same match in which Sachin Tendulkar and Waqar Younis also made their international debuts. Salil picked up two wickets in that Test match.

As a domestic cricketer, Ankola was regarded as one of Mumbai’s leading fast bowlers during the 1990s. He played 54 first-class matches and claimed 181 wickets, with best bowling figures of 6 for 47.
His cricket career was cut short at the age of 28 due to health issues, after which he moved into acting and appeared in several television serials and films.
In recent years, Salil remained closely connected with cricket through commentary and administration. He served as Mumbai’s chief selector and later became a national selector for the Indian cricket team from January 2023 to August 2024.
The news of his treatment has led to support and concern from members of the cricket fraternity and fans, many of whom praised his decision to openly seek professional help during a difficult phase of life.
