According to the RBI Handbook 2024-25 and Per-Capita Net State Domestic Product (NSDP) rankings, Delhi has emerged as the richest region in India in terms of per capita income. Delhi, which is a Union Territory, recorded a per capita income of ₹4,93,024 annually. This means the average yearly income per person in Delhi is nearly ₹4.93 lakh.

The rankings are based on per capita NSDP, which measures the average economic output generated per person in a state or Union Territory. Economists often use this indicator to assess the standard of living and economic prosperity of a region.

After Delhi, Telangana secured the second position with a per capita NSDP of around ₹3.87 lakh. Karnataka followed closely with ₹3.80 lakh, while Tamil Nadu recorded ₹3.61 lakh. Haryana completed the top five with a per capita income of approximately ₹3.53 lakh.

Interestingly, Maharashtra, despite being India’s largest state economy in terms of total Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP), ranked lower on the per capita scale with about ₹3.09 lakh per person. Experts say this is largely due to Maharashtra’s large population size, which affects the average income calculation.

Kerala also performed strongly with a per capita income of around ₹3.08 lakh. Other regions that featured among the top performers include Puducherry at ₹2.81 lakh, Uttarakhand at ₹2.74 lakh and Andhra Pradesh at ₹2.66 lakh.

The data highlights how smaller states or Union Territories with strong industrial, service or technology sectors can often outperform larger economies in terms of average income per person.
