Monsoon Update: Amid rising temperatures and intense heatwave conditions across North India and Maharashtra, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a major update on the arrival of the southwest monsoon. According to the latest weather forecast, the monsoon is likely to reach the southern Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands by the end of this week, bringing some relief from the scorching summer heat.

However, before the monsoon advances further, several parts of North and Western India are expected to continue facing severe heatwave conditions over the next few days.

Heatwave Intensifies Across Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Gujarat

The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for Rajasthan due to extreme temperatures. Barmer in Rajasthan recorded a blistering 47.3°C, making it one of the hottest places in the country. The weather department has warned that western Rajasthan will continue to experience severe heatwave conditions throughout the coming week.

Apart from Rajasthan, states including Maharashtra, Gujarat, eastern Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh are also likely to witness intense heatwave conditions for the next four to five days.

Monsoon Progress Gains Momentum

According to IMD officials, a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is expected to strengthen further over the next two days. This development is creating favourable conditions for the advancement of the southwest monsoon.

The weather department stated that the monsoon’s arrival over the southern Bay of Bengal and Andaman region marks the beginning of its gradual journey toward mainland India.

Heavy Rainfall Alert in Southern and Northeastern States

The IMD has also forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in several regions:

  • Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka are likely to receive heavy rainfall over the next few days.
  • Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh may witness extremely heavy rainfall between May 13 and May 18.
  • Heavy rain warnings have also been issued for the Himalayan regions of West Bengal and Sikkim.

Rain and Snowfall Expected in Himalayan States

A new western disturbance is expected to become active from May 15, bringing rainfall and possible snowfall in parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
