Maharashtra Government Warns Strict Action Against Vehicles Without HSRP Number Plates After June 30

Maharashtra, May 14, 2026: Vehicle owners across Maharashtra have been urged to install High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) before the June 30, 2026 deadline, failing which strict action, penalties, and inspection drives will begin across the state from July 1.

The Transport Department has made HSRP number plates mandatory for all vehicles registered before April 1, 2019. With only a few weeks remaining for compliance, authorities have warned that no further relaxation will be given after the deadline expires.

According to Pratap Sarnaik, the state government will launch a special enforcement drive from July 1 to check old vehicles operating without HSRP plates.

During the inspection campaign, traffic police and transport officials will verify vehicles on roads across Maharashtra. Any vehicle found without an HSRP number plate will face immediate action under the Motor Vehicles Act.

Fine of Up to ₹1,000 for Rule Violators

Officials said vehicle owners violating the rule may be required to pay a penalty of up to ₹1,000 as a compounding fee. Authorities also clarified that paying the fine will not exempt vehicle owners from installing the HSRP plate, and repeated violations could attract higher penalties.

Why HSRP Number Plates Are Important

The government stated that HSRP plates are designed to improve vehicle security and help curb crimes involving fake number plates.

These tamper-proof plates come with a unique laser code linked to the vehicle’s registration details on the RTO server, making it easier for authorities to trace stolen vehicles and prevent misuse of duplicate registration numbers.

Vehicle Owners Advised to Book Appointments Early

Transport officials have advised citizens not to wait until the last date and to complete the registration process through the official HSRP portal at the earliest.

Authorities said that even if the installation is pending, vehicle owners who have booked an appointment before June 30 and possess a valid receipt may receive temporary relief during inspections.

However, those who have neither registered nor booked an appointment are likely to face unavoidable action once the enforcement drive begins.

Warning Against Fraudulent Agents

The government has also cautioned citizens against unauthorised agents and middlemen allegedly charging extra money for HSRP registration.

Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik appealed to vehicle owners to use only the official government-authorised website for registration and avoid falling victim to fraud or overcharging by third parties.
