Pune, May 14, 2026: Members of Gulabo Gang and Bitiya Foundation staged a satirical protest against the policies of the Modi government at Shagun Chowk on Laxmi Road in Pune on Thursday. The protest, held under the slogan “Sell Jhalmuri, Not Gold,” drew attention from locals and traders in the busy market area.

The agitation was organised in response to reports that the central government had appealed to citizens to avoid purchasing gold for the next one year. As part of the symbolic protest, activists visited several jewellery shops in the area and humorously advised shopkeepers to “sell jhalmuri instead of gold.”

Women activists participating in the protest distributed jhalmuri to citizens and shopkeepers while criticising the government’s economic policies in a satirical manner. The unique style of protest created considerable buzz in the Laxmi Road area.

Jeweller Sachin Ashtekar of Ashtekar Saraf was also present during the protest. Activists handed him jhalmuri and symbolically urged him to sell the popular snack instead of gold.

The protest was organised by social activist Sangeeta Tiwari. Several women office-bearers and members of Gulabo Gang and Bitiya Foundation participated in the agitation, including Shobha Panikar, Bharatiya Londhe, Kirti Jadhav, and Parul Tai.

The organisers stated that the protest aimed to highlight the growing burden of inflation, financial stress on common citizens, and the impact of frequently changing government policies on the public.
