Tamil Nadu woman dies after getting trapped under elephant during bathing session at popular Kodagu tourist camp
Kodagu, 18th May 2026: A 33-year-old tourist from Tamil Nadu lost her life after two captive elephants suddenly turned aggressive and clashed with each other at the famous Dubare Elephant Camp in Karnataka’s Kodagu district on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Tulasi, who had visited the camp as a tourist. According to forest department officials, the incident took place near the riverbank while elephants were being bathed as part of their regular routine.
Officials said two elephants, Kanchan and Marthanda, unexpectedly began fighting during the bathing session. Despite attempts by mahouts to control the animals, the situation went out of control within moments.
As per information shared by authorities, elephant Kanchan reportedly charged towards Marthanda during the clash. In the confusion, Marthanda lost balance and fell near the tourist area. Tulasi, who was standing nearby watching the activity, got trapped under the elephant and suffered severe injuries. She died on the spot before help could arrive.
The sudden incident created panic among tourists and staff present at the camp. Forest officials and local authorities immediately rushed to the scene, and an inquiry has been ordered into the accident.
Dubare Elephant Camp, located on the banks of the River Cauvery in Kodagu, is one of Karnataka’s well-known tourist attractions. The camp is popular for elephant interaction activities such as feeding and bathing sessions conducted under the supervision of mahouts and forest staff.
Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre expressed sorrow over the tragic incident and extended condolences to the family of the deceased tourist.
Forest department officials said a detailed investigation has been launched to find out the exact circumstances that led to the accident. Authorities are also expected to review safety arrangements and visitor guidelines at the tourist facility.
The incident has once again sparked concerns about visitor safety at wildlife tourism centres, especially during close-contact activities involving captive elephants, whose behaviour can sometimes become unpredictable.
