Pune, May 23, 2026: Heavy pre-monsoon rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning swept across several parts of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad on Friday evening, causing severe waterlogging, traffic congestion and disruptions during peak office hours.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Chinchwad received the highest rainfall, recording nearly 60 mm within two hours, while Shivajinagar registered 13.1 mm rainfall during the evening.

The sudden spell of rain affected several areas including Kondhwa, Katraj, Hinjewadi, Hadapsar, Warje, Kothrud, Shivajinagar and Chinchwad. Water accumulated in multiple low-lying locations, slowing traffic movement and creating difficulties for commuters across major roads.

While many residents welcomed the showers as relief from the intense summer heat, others faced long delays due to flooded roads and poor visibility.

However, commuters faced significant inconvenience. .

Rain-related incidents were also reported from several parts of the city. Multiple cases of tree collapse occurred in areas such as Mohamadwadi, NIBM road, Jyoti Chowk, Wanowrie, and many other areas. Traffic on the Undir to Khadi machine chowk remained disrupted for nearly two hours after a pick up truck got stuck into a drainage chamber. Police later cleared the road and restored traffic movement.

Residents from Wanowrie also reported that many two-wheelers either skidded or broke down on waterlogged roads, leading to additional traffic issues.

Weather experts stated that thunderstorm activity developed over Pune, Satara and Raigad districts during the afternoon, moving westward and bringing lightning along with rainfall.

A lightning-related incident was also reported from Bhosari, though officials had not confirmed further details till late evening.

IMD Pune officials have predicted the possibility of more rain and thunderstorm activity over the next 24 hours. However, no major weather warning has been issued so far, and partly cloudy conditions are expected during the afternoon and evening hours.
