Supriya Sule Raises Alarm Over Rising Crime In Pune, Targets Police And State Government
Pune, May 23, 2026: Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) MP Supriya Sule strongly criticised the Pune Police and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the worsening law-and-order situation in Pune, claiming that the city’s image as an educational hub is now being replaced by that of a “crime capital.”
Speaking to the media on Friday after visiting the family of a child who died in a lift accident on Sinhagad Road, Sule cited government data and alleged that Pune currently ranks fifth in the country and first in Maharashtra in terms of crime incidents.
“Pune was once known as the educational capital. The rising crime rate reflects the complete failure of the police administration and the Home Department,” Sule said.
She appealed to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also handles the Home portfolio, to intervene immediately and take strict action to improve the situation.
Sule stated that politics should be kept aside while addressing public safety concerns. She further warned that if the law-and-order situation does not improve within 15 days, the Pune Police Commissioner should be sent on compulsory leave.
Referring to recent incidents, Sule claimed that six murders or major crimes had occurred at a single chowk within eight days, adding that criminals no longer fear the police.
She also alleged that the police acted unfairly against NCP (SP) spokesperson Vikas Lawande, who was arrested on Thursday over controversial remarks related to leaders from the Warkari sect.
Sule further criticised the police response system, claiming that her calls to the Pune Police Commissioner went unanswered. “If elected representatives are not getting responses from the police, one can imagine the difficulties faced by common citizens seeking justice,” she said.
The MP added that she is prepared to provide crime-related data shared by Union Home Minister Amit Shah if the Maharashtra government disputes the figures regarding Pune’s crime situation.
