Pune, May 23, 2026: A mysterious ancient tunnel discovered near the historic Visapur Fort in Pune district’s Maval region has sparked excitement among history enthusiasts and fort researchers.

The tunnel was reportedly found by members of the social organisation “Safar 361 Killyanchi” while trekking through a remote route near Malewadi towards Visapur Fort. The discovery was made in a rocky cliff section along an isolated path.

According to preliminary observations, the structure appears to be completely man-made. Researchers noted visible chisel and hammer marks on the walls, indicating that the tunnel was carved manually centuries ago.

The tunnel is estimated to be around 50 feet long with an approximate width and height of 3 feet each. Initially straight, the passage reportedly becomes deeper further inside and turns towards both the left and right directions. Water and mud have currently accumulated inside the structure.

The Maval region, located amidst the Sahyadri mountain ranges, holds immense historical importance as it is closely associated with the rise of the Maratha Empire under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The local “Mavalas” played a crucial role in the establishment of Swarajya.

Speaking about the discovery, historian Dr Pramod Borade said similar underground structures are believed to have existed around Lohagad, Visapur and Tung forts during the early medieval period.

Researchers suspect that the tunnel may have been used for meditation, spiritual practices or secret movement, though its exact purpose is yet to be confirmed.

The discovery has added a new chapter to Maharashtra’s rich fort heritage, and historians are now demanding detailed archaeological and historical research to uncover the tunnel’s origin and significance.
