Commuters may soon travel on the first stretch of the Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar Metro as the state government pushes for faster completion.

Pune residents could soon get a major boost in public transport, as the first phase of the Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar Metro is expected to begin operations by July 15.

During a review meeting in Mumbai, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) to complete the first phase of the project at the earliest. While the original target was June 30, PMRDA officials have said that 12 stations on the route are now expected to be ready by mid-July.

PMRDA Commissioner Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari said that some work is still pending on the corridor. However, the first 12 stations are likely to open by July 15, allowing passengers to travel on a significant section of the route. The remaining stretch up to Shivajinagar, covering all 23 stations, is expected to become operational within the next two to three months.

The 23.2-km Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar Metro corridor is India’s first metro project being developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The project includes 23 elevated stations and is being executed by Tata Group’s TRIL and Siemens Project Ventures at a cost of ₹8,313 crore.

Reviewing various infrastructure projects across Maharashtra, Chief Minister Fadnavis stressed that delays in major public projects would not be tolerated. He directed authorities to resolve hurdles quickly and ensure projects are completed within the stipulated timelines. He also warned that contractors responsible for repeated delays should not be awarded new projects.

The state government has emphasized that major infrastructure projects should ideally be completed within three to three-and-a-half years to ensure faster benefits for citizens.
