Maharashtra Monsoon Update: Rain Wait Continues for Pune and Mumbai as Weather Conditions Remain Unfavourable

Pune, 12 June, 2026: While the southwest monsoon continues to advance across several parts of India, its progress has slowed over Maharashtra and Gujarat. As a result, residents of Mumbai, Pune, Konkan and Gujarat may have to wait a little longer for rainfall. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon is moving steadily across eastern and northeastern India, but conditions along the western coast remain less favourable.

The monsoon arrived in Kerala on May 24 and initially advanced rapidly across the country. Since then, it has covered large parts of Northeast India, West Bengal, Sikkim and several southern states, including Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. By June 11, the monsoon had also progressed into parts of Bihar and eastern India.

However, the Arabian Sea branch of the monsoon has slowed down over the past few days, delaying its further advance into Maharashtra and Gujarat. This has left people in Mumbai, Pune and nearby regions waiting for much-needed rainfall and relief from the heat.

Why Has the Monsoon Slowed Down?

Weather experts say the slowdown is mainly due to dry air currents and the absence of low-pressure systems. Dry weather conditions over Konkan, Mumbai and Pune have weakened the moisture-laden monsoon winds. Changes in wind direction have also disrupted the normal movement of the monsoon.

Meteorologists explain that the Arabian Sea branch of the monsoon is more sensitive to such atmospheric changes than the Bay of Bengal branch, which continues to move forward steadily across eastern and northeastern India.

The lack of low-pressure areas, depressions or cyclonic systems has further affected the monsoon’s pace. These systems usually help pull moisture inland and support the monsoon’s advance. In their absence, western India is experiencing warm and dry weather, although isolated light showers may still occur.

Eastern India Receives Rainfall

While western states continue to wait, many parts of eastern and northeastern India are already experiencing active monsoon conditions. Regular rainfall and cooler temperatures have brought relief to residents in these regions.

According to IMD, weather conditions are expected to become more favourable for the monsoon’s advance across central and eastern India in the coming days.

When Will Maharashtra Receive Rain?

Weather experts believe the chances of significant pre-monsoon rainfall in Maharashtra remain low until around June 20 due to the continued influence of dry air. The monsoon is expected to regain strength during the latter half of June, increasing the likelihood of widespread rainfall across Mumbai, Pune and other parts of the state.

Until then, residents across western India may have to endure a few more days of hot and humid weather while waiting for the full arrival of the southwest monsoon.
