Pune, June 15, 2026: With the monsoon season fast approaching, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has acknowledged that it has been unable to fully resolve the city’s persistent waterlogging issues and will now undertake temporary measures at several vulnerable locations.

The decision follows a review meeting chaired by City Engineer Aniruddha Pavaskar to assess pre-monsoon preparedness and flood mitigation efforts. Senior officials from the Sewerage Department, Road Department, regional offices, and administrative divisions participated in the meeting.

According to PMC officials, around 250 locations across Pune have been identified as prone to waterlogging. Of these, 120 sites were prioritized for immediate intervention. So far, work has been completed at 44 locations, while projects are underway at 42 others. However, the remaining 34 sites require major infrastructure interventions that cannot be completed before the onset of the monsoon.

As a result, the civic body has decided to implement temporary solutions at these sensitive locations. The Road Department has been tasked with completing 15 works, regional offices will undertake eight projects, and the Sewerage Department will carry out 11 works over the next two weeks.

Under PMC Commissioner’s orders issued on October 1, 2025, maintenance and repair responsibilities for drainage infrastructure have been decentralized. Repairs and cleaning of drainage lines up to 600 mm in diameter are being handled by regional offices, while larger pipelines remain under the jurisdiction of the central Sewerage Department.

To improve monsoon preparedness, officials have been instructed to deploy jetting machines, jetting-cum-suction machines, grab machines, and champion machines from vehicle depots to clear blocked drainage lines. Priority will also be given to removing silt from chambers and sewer lines to ensure smooth flow of stormwater.

Night-Shift Teams to Be Deployed

PMC has directed regional offices to coordinate with the Road Department and deploy road maintenance vans for the rapid drainage of rainwater during heavy nighttime rainfall. Each regional office has been instructed to maintain a minimum workforce of five personnel during night shifts.

Officials have also been ordered to ensure the availability of pumps at locations where water tends to accumulate on roads and private properties. The Disaster Management Department and regional offices will jointly oversee these arrangements.

24-Hour Monsoon Complaint Redressal System

To address monsoon-related emergencies, PMC will operate a 24-hour complaint redressal center through its Disaster Management Department. Sub-engineers from the Disaster Management, Construction, Sewerage, and Encroachment Departments will be deployed for night-duty operations.

A dedicated control room will be established, and its contact number will be made available to citizens to facilitate quick response during emergencies and heavy rainfall events.
